JOB SUMMARY:
The Surgical Office Medical Assistant supports the general surgery clinic functions by coordinating surgeon schedules and activities, assisting in daily practical and clinical care and educational and general program development. This position is under the supervision of the Clinic Coordinator
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. The coordination of the surgeons short- and long-term schedules.
2. Provides surgical patient triage with appropriate response in a timely manner.
3. Communicates patient status, observations, problems or complaints to the surgeon.
4. Demonstrates accurate, pertinent medical data collection and thorough documentation in the patient chart.
5. Assists with minor surgical procedures and sterile field set-up.
6. Provides thorough patient pre and post-op instruction
7. Formulates surgical procedure scheduling
8. Provides patient educational materials.
9. Assists with the development of surgical forms.
10. Maintains a safe, neat and clean work environment.
11. Presents a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
12. Deals with people in a tactful and friendly manner.
13. Assists with patient scheduling and acquires prior authorizations for surgical procedures.
14. Insures correct coding and documentation for correct billing procedures.
15. Other duties as assigned by the Clinic Coordinator.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and License:
High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
Certifications:
Current Medical Assistant Certification or comparative experience.
CPR certification or Basic Life Support (BLS)

Additional Qualifications:
1. Excellent verbal communication, reading and math skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Works indoors in an air-conditioned environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent use of computer and phone, and other standard office machines. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, push, pull using proper body mechanics and move/lift varying amounts of weight to a maximum of 50 lbs.
